Teaching Kids to Sew- Tips & Ideas

Teaching Kids to Sew- Tips & Ideas

In this video I share with you some tips and ideas that I am implementing as I teach my 3 yr old son to use the sewing machine he got for Christmas.

My son’s sewing machine is a Kenmore 11206 (sometimes called Mini Ultra).

It is the same sewing machine as the popular Janome Hello Kitty machine without the Janome name. But after much research I discovered that Janome makes the newer Kenmore machines. So the machine we use is a Janome with the Kenmore name on it, basically. Either of these machines would be fine and be the same thing.

I DO NOT recommend teaching young children how to sew just based on their age. Know your child and ONLY teach them to use a sewing machine when you think they are ready.

I consider a sewing machine a power tool and if you don’t know what you are doing you can injure yourself pretty bad if your hands come in contact with the needle as it’s moving. Please be careful and ALWAYS supervise any child when they are sewing on a machine.

My son is very careful and meticulous in what he does so, as a parent I felt he was ready to begin learning the basics. I hope this video will give you some ideas and tips that you will be able to incorporate in your sewing sessions with kids or event adult beginners.

Stay tuned for more Sewing with Kids videos that I will be working on in the future.

  1. Love it!! I just bought my 7 year old niece a sewing machine – Singer Tradition 2277. I’m watching videos on how to teach her. I taught myself as a teen asking the fabric store personnel how to read the patterns each time I bought one!! Can’t wait to teach her!!

  2. When I had my last child a little girl 36 years ago she had 2 older brothers one 7 and one 9. They watched me make clothes for her and they wanted to, too. So I let them each make her a Bib. I actually still have those bibs. They were so proud.

  3. I’m getting the biggest charge out of your cute son! He’s adorable! I’ve been sewing since I was 12 (I’m 69), and preparing to teach my 10 year old granddaughter to see (her request), and was looking for best ways to begin. Your video with your son is precious and perfect, thank you! ❤

  4. What a great way to teach a young child. Making him aware of the dangers, of using the right words, timing the project to his attention span… The way he talked proved that he really got the message and enjoyed it. What a cute little guy! Thanks so much, I will use your technique with my grandkids.

  5. What a great video. You are a great teacher, and he is SO smart and sweet. My 7 year old great grandson is wanting to sew so we are beginning to try it out. Thanks for video

  6. So excited to see your little guy sewing! My great niece just asked me if I could teach her daughter to sew because they got her a sewing machine for Christmas. It’s been 40 years since I taught my own kids to sew and they were probably the age of your little man. Your tips are wonderful! I sat my own kiddos in my lap and had them place their hands on mine. I actually think they were still in diapers! Thank you so much for sharing! ❤

  7. Curious…I notice this was 10 years ago. Does your son still enjoy sewing? I’m about to start teaching my 4 year old grand daughter.

  8. He is adorable! You are a great mom/teacher too. Just looking for some ideas for my 5 yr old granddaughter, thank you.

  9. I started teaching my granddaughter, age 5, to hand sew. I didn’t even think about using a machine. I decided to see if anyone else out there were teaching young ones. Love your video. PS I created her own sewing kit and taught her the tool’s names. I punched holes in cardboard for her first lesson, that spelled out her name. She picked a new color for each letter. For those willing to teach, these young ones are sponges and will learn it all. My son, at age three, had to teach his baby sitter, age fourteen, how to use our electric can opener.

  10. What an adorable son you have. I have five grandkids between the age of three and seven and they all want to learn to sew. What a joy they are. ❤❤❤

  11. Fantastic! I love your philosophy about giving the kids real supplies so they take safety seriously!

  12. He’s adorable and now a BIG boy judging from the date this was posted. I’m teaching my granddaughters to sew Friday so I’m incorporating some of your tips. 🥰

  13. Thank you for sharing The achievement your son is making in life! Today I plan to teach my granddaughter and grandson who are six how to sew!
It’s becoming a lost art and I’m happy to see others teach their children how to sew, great job mom❤🙋‍♀️🇨🇦

  14. My middle kiddo just turned 4 and keeps telling me she can’t wait to be a grown up and make things like Momma. I make them a lot of toys, clothes and bags. I’ve told her that when she can listen well, and not throw things when she’s frustrated (Yikes!) We can start, and that she doesn’t have to be a grown up to learn to sew things like I do. She already cooks dinner (Almost solo with supervision, at this point!) Once a week (Same meal, she’s really got it down) but she started her cooking journey before her frustrations got bad and what she does she knows by heart at this point.
My 5yr old would like to but lacks the patience or the focus needed (He is ASD). So instead he tells me what to make and I do most of it and let him finish up. We made leather froggy keyring for his fave staff as end-of-year gifts last week and he did the burnishing and the hole punches for the eyes.

Thanks for showing me I’m not unreasonable for thinking my kids can do this (Once their outbursts settle down). Your son was so well behaved!

  15. what sewing machine do you recommend for kids ages 7-9? also for myself? I have a Husqvarna but its a bit sensitive and over my head. thanks

  16. I’m so in love with this little fella. Great job. I’m teaching my grandson to sew. He is 15.

  17. 10 years ago! He’s grown! My 13 year old grandson sewed his first project this past year. He made a pocket pillow! I’m so proud of him. When he asked why he needed to learn to sew, I told him because I wouldn’t be around to sew for him forever and his future wife might not sew. I got the biggest grin from him!

  18. Just delightful. Hope he stuck with it. Going to use this for my smaller grandchildren when they ask to sew.

  19. That was awesome, he was adorable and I’m sure he still is. I am teaching after school sewing looking for ideas
